What is fluid intelligence?
Updated 31 October 2026
Fluid intelligence is your ability to solve new problems: spotting patterns and working out rules without relying on what you already know.
Fluid vs crystallized
The psychologist Raymond Cattell split general intelligence into two parts. Fluid intelligence is reasoning on the spot. Crystallized intelligence is the knowledge and skills you’ve built up, like vocabulary and facts.
| Fluid | Crystallized | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Reasoning with new problems | Using what you’ve learned |
| Examples | Matrix puzzles, number series, working out a new game | Vocabulary, general knowledge, arithmetic facts |
| Over life | Peaks in early adulthood, then slowly declines | Keeps growing well into adulthood |
| Depends on school | Less | More |
The two are linked: people who reason well tend to learn faster, so over time fluid ability helps build knowledge. More in does IQ change with age?
How it’s measured
With problems that are new to everyone and need no knowledge: abstract matrices, series of shapes or numbers, and pattern puzzles. These tasks are closely tied to general intelligence, which is why most IQ tests include them.
Can you train it?
Some studies once suggested that memory training could raise fluid intelligence, but larger follow-up studies mostly didn’t confirm it. Learning and staying active help your mind in many ways, but there’s no proven shortcut. More in can you increase your IQ?
Quick answers
- Is fluid intelligence the same as IQ? Not quite. It’s one of the main parts of IQ; a full test also looks at knowledge, memory and speed.
- What does UNIQUE measure? Fluid reasoning, with abstract matrices that need no words or school knowledge.

UNIQUE is a non-verbal IQ test: 64 matrices that adapt to your level. Taking it is free; you pay only to see your result.
